IF launches the African Youth Network Initiative
The International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus has launched a new African Youth Network Initiative, creating a platform for young people across Africa to connect, share experiences, and strengthen collaboration on issues affecting persons living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH).
The initiative brings together young advocates from different countries to promote peer support, exchange ideas, and build regional cooperation through youth-led activities and discussions.
First meetings bring together young advocates from across Africa
The first two online meetings, held in March and April 2026, gathered participants from Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Young representatives shared local initiatives and discussed the realities, priorities, and challenges faced by persons living with disabilities in their communities.
The discussions highlighted the importance of youth leadership and the need to create stronger opportunities for collaboration and participation across the region.
During the kick-off meetings, participants explored several key topics affecting young persons with disabilities, including:
- Discrimination and social inclusion
- Access to healthcare and catheterisation support
- Employment opportunities and skills development
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Self-expression, confidence, and peer support
- Awareness raising and advocacy
Participants also reflected on the importance of creating safe and empowering spaces where young people can openly share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations.
Strengthening regional collaboration
During the first meeting, Nebiyat Tesfaye, representative of the IF Youth Group SBH, introduced the vision and objectives of the African Youth Network Initiative. The exchange opened discussions on how the Network could strengthen youth participation, peer learning, and regional coordination across Africa.
Participants expressed strong interest in future collaboration opportunities and committed to continuing the development of the Network through regular meetings and joint initiatives.
Looking ahead
As part of its next steps, the group is exploring the organisation of a webinar in October 2026 in connection with World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day 2026. Participants also discussed launching video testimonials and a social media campaign to amplify the voices and experiences of young persons living with disabilities across Africa.
The Network will continue its discussions and collaborative efforts during the next meeting, scheduled for 27 May 2026 at 14:30 (Brussels time), with members encouraging additional youth representatives from across the region to join future discussions and activities.
Through this initiative, IF aims to strengthen youth engagement, foster regional solidarity, and ensure that the voices of young persons living with SBH are heard and represented.
