As the global disability community gathers in New York for the 19th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP19), this year’s discussions carry particular significance as we mark the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
While health is not always at the centre of disability policy discussions, it remains fundamental to achieving inclusion, participation, independent living, and the full realisation of rights for persons with disabilities. Access to quality healthcare, rehabilitation, assistive products, and lifelong support services continues to shape opportunities across education, employment, and community life.
This year’s COSP19 programme features several events dedicated to advancing health equity for persons with disabilities, reflecting growing recognition that inclusive health systems are essential to delivering on the promise of the UNCRPD.

Building Momentum for Health Equity
These discussions come at an important moment. Twenty years after the adoption of the UNCRPD, significant progress has been made in advancing disability rights globally. Yet many persons with disabilities continue to face barriers in accessing healthcare and support services, resulting in persistent health inequalities.
Through the SBH Health Equity Project and its participation in global initiatives such as the WHO Disability Health Equity Network, IF remains committed to ensuring that health equity remains a central part of the disability rights agenda.
We invite members, partners, advocates, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to join these conversations and help advance more equitable, inclusive, and rights-based health systems for all.
