News – Towards UN WSBHD

As October marks World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, IFSBH is calling on its members to join the advocacy effort towards a United Nations-recognised World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day.

Following the publication of our policy brief, which sets out the case for this recognition, IFSBH is exploring a pathway through the United Nations General Assembly.

A UN-recognised WSBHD would provide an international platform to raise awareness of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, bring together governments and civil society around shared priorities, promote prevention and lifelong care, challenge stigma, and strengthen the rights and inclusion of persons living with SBH worldwide.

How can IFSBH members help advocate for a UN-recognised World SBH Day?

A UN International Day requires government support and sustained diplomatic engagement, backed by a broad coalition of civil society organisations, disability rights advocates and healthcare stakeholders.

IFSBH is coordinating this global effort, and our members have a vital role to play. The first step is to open a conversation with your national authorities. You do not need previous advocacy experience or an immediate commitment from your government. Follow the steps outlined in the image below to get started and keep IFSBH informed of your progress.
