IF Statement on Strengthening Rehabilitation in Health Systems for persons with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus
IF Statement on Strengthening Rehabilitation in Health Systems for persons with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus
With a new IF statement, the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF) stands as a precursor with its long-time focus on rehabilitation. Indeed, almost thirty years ago, IF contacted the World Health Organization and proposed to work together for producing a guide for mid-level rehabilitation workers, to be used for children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SBH).
Years later, IF still holds the topic high in its agenda. Its previous positions focused notably on the need for the access to multidisciplinary care for persons with SBH or its response to the consultation launched by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Earlier this year, the 76th World Health Assembly Resolution on strengthening rehabilitation in health systems has been adopted. This resolution was made due to the context of increasing unmet needs for rehabilitation. This resolution is meaningful for persons with SBH as their quality of life depends on their access to a rehabilitation service.
In this new statement IF outlines:
- What rehabilitation is;
- Why strengthening rehabilitation for persons with SBH is necessary;
- A list of actions at global level on how to strengthen rehabilitation in health systems for persons with SBH;
- The barriers for making the rehabilitation a reality for all persons with SBH;
- IF’s recommendations on strengthening rehabilitation for SBH in health systems.
