UGANDA (St. Matthew)

St. Matthew Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Support Alliance Uganda

Description

Our Mission: To ensure that every child born with Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus in Uganda survives, thrives, and belongs; through healthcare, education, and family empowerment rooted in community.

St. Matthew Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Support Alliance Uganda was born from lived experience, founded by parents who, following the birth of their son Matthew with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in June 2023, encountered a landscape of staggering gaps: scarce information, absent peer support, and communities that often interpreted their child’s condition as spiritual failing rather than medical reality.

St. Matthew serves over 160 families across Uganda, working where clinical systems cannot follow; in the household, the community, the church, and the school. Through caregiver training, peer support networks, community-based rehabilitation, faith-community engagement, and stigma reduction, the Alliance bridges the gap between hospital discharge and household reality. St. Matthew further facilitates referrals to specialist hospitals and trains caregivers in local languages to recognise danger signs before they become crises.
