Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Kenya (SHAK Kenya) is a national organization representing people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, their families and caregivers across Kenya. We work to promote the rights, dignity and inclusion of people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus through advocacy, awareness creation, community outreach, health and nutrition initiatives, capacity building, and linkages to services and support.

SHAK Kenya currently has 16 chapters working across different counties in Kenya, enabling us to reach and engage communities at the local level. Our work includes advocacy on disability rights, access to healthcare and social services, nutrition, inclusion and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities. We collaborate with partners including GAIN and SANKU on nutrition advocacy and related initiatives. We also work with the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), the umbrella organization representing persons with disabilities in Kenya, particularly on disability rights, advocacy, inclusion and participation. However, sustaining our 16 chapters remains a challenge due to limited and unpredictable funding, affecting coordination, activities and continuity at county level. Strengthening sustainable partnerships and resources is therefore a key priority for SHAK Kenya.
